Liquid radioactive waste treatment and conditioning

State: Ongoing
Period: 2017-2025

The research activities conducted in the IPU plant produced less than 1 cubic metre of radioactive waste containing plutonium. This waste, both aqueous and organic, is partly stored in the Plutonium plant and partly in interim storage facilities in Nucleco.

Further studies and tests are required to identify the best treatment and conditioning processes for this kind of waste. Feasibility analysis for the treatment and conditioning of organic liquid waste are still ongoing, while the analysis for aqueous radioactive waste were completed in December 2018, as well as qualification activities for cementation within a new prototype of Glove Box that will be installed in the Plutonium plant
