Implementation of new Alpha Compaction Station and new Casaccia Repository

Status: in progress
Duration: 2018-2028

The project covers the implementation of two plants, the "Alpha Compaction Station" and the "New Repository" to store conditioned waste casks.

The Compaction station will perform the treatment and conditioning of solid intermediate-level radioactive waste containing Plutonium, along with the decontamination of potentially releasable materials freed from radiological restrictions.

The New Repository will, instead, temporarily host intermediate-level conditioned radioactive waste.

More specifically,

  • on the one hand, the Station will reduce the previous and future radioactive waste resulting from the Plutonium plant through Compaction and place the said waste in casks ready to be stored in the National Repository;
  • on the other hand, the New Repository will house conditioned waste resulting from the Station and the OPEC-1 repository, pending their final arrangement in the National Repository.

As for the project progress, while the preliminary design is ready, the final design of both buildings is currently being completed.

Soon, Sogin will submit the request to modify the plant to the competent authorities pursuant to Article 233 of Legislative Decree 101/2020.
