Sogin at iWeek's first day

06 October 2023

Sogin is taking part in the fourth edition of iWeek (Intelligence Week) entitled "Nuclear, can it be done?", which kicked off yesterday with an initial event in Milan at the Sala Pirelli of the ICE Agency. The initiative, promoted by V&A - Vento & Associati and Dune, provides an opportunity for confrontation to institutions, organisations and companies in the energy and nuclear sector.

After the institutional greetings of the Undersecretary of State to the Presidency of the Italian Council of Ministers, Alessandro Morelli, the day was divided into speeches and round tables that addressed various topics, from new nuclear technologies to decommissioning and the NIMBY dilemma, including the presentation of the results of a survey on the relationship between Italians and nuclear power.
In particular, Sogin CEO Gian Luca Artizzu, spoke at the round table, entitled “The Italian safety and decommissioning chain”, moderated by Fausta Chiesa, journalist for Corriere della Sera. The panel also included Alessandro Dodaro, Director of ENEA's Nuclear Fusion and Nuclear Safety Technologies (FSN) Department, Federico Gianni, CEO of Campoverde, and Massimo Morichi, Member of the Scientific Committee of Transmutex and Head of the MICADO Project at EVP CAEN.

Artizzu illustrated the specificities of nuclear decommissioning, highlighting that it requires the adoption of high safety standards and extensive expertise covering the back end of the nuclear industrial chain: from permitting to radiation protection, from waste management to environmental protection.

A further issue that has emerged is the construction of the National Radioactive Waste Repository, with the adjoining Technology Park. Sogin's CEO emphasised that this is a necessary infrastructure for the country, regardless of possible developments in the Italian energy scenario. The use of technologies that produce radioactive waste is in fact not only related to the production of energy from nuclear sources, but is also quite common in industrial applications, as well as in the medical sector, for both diagnostics and therapies.

The next iWeek event will be held on Wednesday 11 October at the Palazzo Altieri in Rome and will be attended by the President of Sogin, Admiral Carlo Massagli.
