Radioactive waste management

​​​​Radioactive waste resulting both from previous plant operations, and from decommissioning activities, is stored in the interim storage facilities of the site. Upon completion of the gradual transfer of the waste to National Repository, all interim facilities will be demolished.

At the end of 2022, the volume of (solid and liquid) radioactive waste, classified according to the Decree of 7 August 2015, and located in the plant of Rotondella, amounts to 3,857 cubic metres. The volume can vary based on the year, the continuation of safe maintenance and decommissioning activities and the conditioning techniques for previous waste.

  • Amount of stored waste: 142 cubic metres
  • Type of stored waste: Very Low-Level Waste (114 cubic metres) and Low Level Waste (28 cubic metres)

Other buffer for interim storage

  • Amount of stored waste: 1.386 cubic metres
  • Type of stored waste: Very Low-Level Waste (1.312 cubic metres); Low Level Waste (16 cubic metres); Intermediate Level Waste (58 cubic metres)

An additional interim storage facility will be built to store solid waste resulting from cementation of the final product. The nitric-based solution of the final product is currently stored in a tank within an underground premise of the plant.
