The return of metal smelting residues completed at the Garigliano plant
18 December 2024

Their initial volume reduced by more than 90% The Garigliano power plant, which is located in the Municipality of Sessa Aurunca (Caserta), today received the second and final transportation of 155 products from the Cyclife Sweden AB plant in Sweden, containing about 30 tons of residues resulting from the treatment of 420 tons of slightly contaminated metal materials produced by the decommissioning works in progress at the facility.
These products, placed in ISO-certified and compliant containers, were transported by road, under the control of the National Inspectorate for Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection and the various competent Authorities.
Between September 2020 and November 2021, Sogin, together with its subsidiary Nucleco, had coordinated seven shipments to Sweden, each transporting about 60 tons of these metals.
In June 2022, the metals were treated in a single smelting campaign thus reducing their volume by more than 90% compared to the initial volume. The 155 products were safely stored at the site's temporary repositories ready for delivery to the National Repository, once this became available.
This activity aligns with Sogin's commitment of pursuing a circular economy strategy that aims to minimize the production of radioactive waste by adopting innovative technologies and processes, and therefore avoiding the construction of new storage facilities.
