The decommissioned mines at Pasquasia and Bosco Palo do not fall within the scope of the CNAI proposal
07 October 2024

With regard to certain publications that appeared over the weekend in the local press in the Sicily region, Sogin specifies that the list of 51 areas included in the proposed National Map of Suitable Areas (Carta Nazionale delle Aree Idonee, CNAI), published by the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security on 13 December 2023, does not include the sites of the two decommissioned Sicilian mines of Pasquasia (Enna) and Bosco Palo (Caltanissetta).
These two areas were immediately excluded on the basis of the technical criteria detailed in Technical Guide no. 29, which guides Sogin's work.
It should also be noted that there are no preferences among the areas in the CNAI proposal and, to date, no choice has been made regarding the area regarding where the National Repository for radioactive waste and Technology Park will be built.
The procedure for selecting the area where the National Repository will be built is still ongoing and the CNAI proposal will have to take into account the results of the Strategic Environmental Assessment.
