The construction of the temporary DT2 repository at the Garigliano power plant becomes a reality

The facility will receive radioactive waste produced by dismantling the reactor

At the Garigliano power plant, which is located in the Municipality of Sessa Aurunca (Caserta), Sogin began construction on the new temporary DT2 repository with the laying of the foundation slab for the new structure.

The new temporary repository will serve to safely house approximately 1,800 cubic metres of low and intermediate activity radioactive waste originating solely from the dismantling operations at the Campania power plant and, more specifically, from the dismantling of the systems and components inside the reactor building, which began last December, with a view to their subsequent transfer to the National Repository, once this becomes available.

The structure, designed according to the best international standards, has a rectangular configuration of 70 meters by 18 meters and a height of 13 meters, with a total volume capacity of about 16,500 cubic metres.

This cubic footage will include an operational handling area, service utilities for the repository’s operations and a storage area equipped, among other things, with a bridge crane for the remote handling of radioactive waste containers, with the related corridors for inspecting the latter.

The ongoing activities envisage the civil works to be completed in June 2025 and the subsequent commissioning of the repository, within the first half of 2026, once the testing is done.

This is a significant outcome for the progress of the site's radioactive waste disposal and safe management programme, which will allow the dismantling of the systems and components of the Campania power plant's reactor building to be completed.
