Sogin: Shareholders' Meeting approves the 2023 Financial Statements

12 September 2024

On 5 September, Sogin's Shareholders' Meeting approved the Group Financial Statements at 31 December 2023; these are the first Financial Statements of the Board of Directors that took office on 3 August 2023, led by Chairman Carlo Massagli and CEO Gian Luca Artizzu.

Sogin's financial statements closed with a profit of EUR 1.2 million (profit of EUR 0.9 million in 2022); the value of production amounted to approximately EUR 212.9 million, down from the approximately EUR 276.9 million in 2022. This nonetheless presented an exceptional and non-recurring result, which was attributable to the activities related to managing the Fuel Cycle. EBITDA stands at approximately EUR 19.1 million (EUR 21.8 million in 2022).

Nucleco, the Group's subsidiary, also closed with a profit of EUR 2.4 million (- EUR 0.51 million in 2022), and the value of production amounted to approximately EUR 39.8 million, increasing on the previous year (EUR 30.5 million in 2022).

In 2023, Sogin achieved a volume of nuclear decommissioning operations (progress costs) equal to approximately EUR 104.5 million, increasing by about 18% compared to 2022, whereas the cumulative physical progress of the nuclear decommissioning programme at 31 December 2023 increased to 43.36%, advancing by 3.98 percentage points compared to 2022.

2023 has been an especially complex year, due to a series of sector-related events, on the one hand, and, on the other, within the Company itself, which has experienced a change in governance and consequent organisational restructuring.

With regard to the sector in which Sogin operates, there has been a significant upswing of public interest in civil nuclear power, following the energy scenarios dictated by the international energy agenda and thanks to a series of political initiatives as well as the initiatives undertaken by private associations of supporters and experts on the subject. Sogin’s contribution in this regard represents the value of technical skills that can naturally be made available to service this renewed interest in the sector.

With regard to the activities related to the National Radioactive Waste Repository and Technology Park (DNPT), after the submission made to the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security in July 2023, of the proposed National Map of Suitable Areas for the siting of the DNPT, the publication of a list of Suitable Areas followed in December 2023, with the consequent publication, in February 2024, of the Decree introducing the option of self-nominations. In addition, Decree-Law no. 181/2023 issued some months previously, had stipulated that Sogin was to prepare a direct incentive programme that would benefit the NRTP host communities.
