02 October 2023

During the 67th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), held from 25 to 29 September in Vienna, the agreement between the Agency and Sogin was renewed, designating the company as a Collaborating Centre. The signing ceremony was held in the presence of Mikhail Chudakov, Deputy Director General and Head of the Agency's Nuclear Energy Department, Sergio Monti, First Counsellor and acting head of the Italian representation to international organisations in Vienna, and Gian Luca Artizzu, CEO of Sogin.

The agreement is part of a path of cooperation with the IAEA that has been strengthened in the four fruitful years of activity since the first signing in 2019.

"This important signature", said Artizzu, "confirms the excellence of Sogin's know-how and its role as the IAEA's chosen partner for technology promotion, the dissemination of best practices, and education and training in the nuclear field."

As part of the conference, the Sogin Group participated in the events promoted by Italy within a national pavilion, under the slogan "Atoms for the Future: Frontier of the Italian Nuclear Research". On Thursday 28 September, Stefania Uras, Deputy Director of the National Repository and Technology Park, presented the Italian project of the national radioactive waste repository and the adjoining technology park. Next, Nadia Cherubini, president of Nucleco , took the floor. She presented the company's activities with a focus on radioactive waste management.

Together with the Sogin Group, the programme of events involved, among others, AIPnD, CNR, ENEA, INFN, ISIN, MITAMBIENTE, the Universities of Rome La Sapienza and Tor Vergata, the University of Pavia, the University of Siena, the Politecnico di Milano, the Museum of Radioactivity and Italian Atomic Agency researchers working in Vienna and in the Seibersdorf laboratories.

Alongside the General Conference, the Scientific Forum, also took place. This year’s edition was dedicated to the theme "Nuclear Innovation for Net Zero". Sogin was invited to participate and represented by Federica Pancotti, Head of Technological Innovation, in Session 2 - "Innovative Solutions to Support Nuclear Development", during which she presented emerging technologies applicable to nuclear decommissioning, such as, in particular, the AIGOR IT software for the management of radioactive objects and the Survey 3D methodology (here is the presentation).

A recording of the session is available on the IAEA website (Sogin / F. Pancotti speech at 3:02).
