Sogin is a member of the European Industrial Alliance on Small Modular Reactors

17 May 2024

Based on a decision of the Alliance Secretariat of 30 April 2024, and following a selection process, Sogin became a member of the European Industrial Alliance on Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). This recognises the significant role that the Company can play, together with the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security and other Italian operators, in international cooperation for technological innovation in the nuclear field.

L’Alleanza, lanciata lo scorso 6 febbraio dalla Commissione The Alliance, launched on 6 February by the European Commission, aims to facilitate and accelerate the development, demonstration and deployment of small modular reactors in Europe, by early 2030. This objective is in line with the recent EU Communication for the achievement of the 2040 and 2050 climate goals, which stresses that all technologies will be needed to achieve the goal of climate neutrality (Net Carbon Zero).

The Alliance’s first General Assembly will be held in Brussels on 29 and 30 May 2024, during which the internal organisational structure will be presented, together with the technical working groups and the related topics to be discussed.

As a full member of the Alliance, Sogin intends actively participating in the technical working groups. Thanks to the skills and know-how it has acquired, the Company will be able to make a decisive contribution to the development of policies and actions aimed at strengthening energy security in the EU and supporting the dissemination of new cutting-edge technologies on small modular reactors. Specifically, Sogin's engagement will focus on the different aspects relating to the decommissioning of future SMRs, nuclear fuel management and reprocessing, stakeholder information and engagement, and training.
