Sogin CEO attends the AIN Annual Conference

06 December 2023

The annual conference of the AIN (Italian Nuclear Association) titled ‘'Italian nuclear power in the international and European landscape’ was held yesterday at Rome’s Teatro Eliseo, with Sogin among its leading protagonists.

The objective of the conference was to present and develop qualified positions and opinions on the commitment of nuclear industries abroad and the basic conditions deemed necessary for taking concrete steps towards the development of nuclear projects in Italy. The conference also provided the opportunity to remember AIN President Umberto Minopoli, who passed away a few months ago.

Current AIN President Stefano Monti opened and closed proceedings, which were divided into several individual speeches and three panels, moderated by RAI journalist Maria Soave, Nomisma Energia President Davide Tabarelli, and AIN Vice President Roberto Adinolfi.

Sogin participated together with leading figures and representatives from the institutional, academic and industrial worlds linked to the nuclear power industry. Other participants included Environment and Energy Security Minister, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, who opened ‘Let’s hear from the institutions’ panel, European Sustainable Nuclear Energy Technology Platform President, Bernard Salha, and IAEA Department of Nuclear Energy Programme Coordinator, Andrea Borio Di Tigliole. Sogin CEO Gian Luca Artizzu took part in the panel on the skills and capabilities of Italy’s nuclear power industry from a national and European perspective.

‘The techniques and measures we adopt in our work’ commented Artizzu, ‘and even throughout the entire nuclear chain, I would say, enable us to handle waste with the utmost safety. The nuclear power industry is certainly complex, but this is precisely why safety always comes first, both in the management of waste and, in general terms, in every phase of a nuclear plant's life: from construction to the end of dismantling operations’.

Another panel that opened with a message from Adolfo Urso, Minister of Enterprise and Made in Italy, presented the point of view of utilities and ‘large energy consumers’.
