15 July 2025

The 15th edition of the Summer School on nuclear decommissioning and radioactive waste management was held from 23 to 27 June, promoted by the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission in collaboration with Sogin and the l'IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency).

The initiative, hosted at the JRC in Ispra (VA) where Sogin is managing the dismantling of the Ispra-1, reactor, aims to disseminate knowledge and a technical-specialist culture on scientific disciplines among graduates.

This year, the JRC Summer School hosted 40 students from different parts of the world, offering them the opportunity to participate in lectures, practical exercises and visits to the Centre's facilities.

In the various training sessions, Sogin explored issues related to radioactive waste management and nuclear decommissioning, which included a visit to the Ispra-1 reactor. Accompanied by the Decommissioning Manager, Paolo Capoferro,, participants learnt more about the history and previous operation of this facility that houses Italy’s first nuclear research reactor. It was also an opportunity to illustrate the dismantling strategy adopted by Sogin and the activities that had already been authorised and completed.

Francesca Onofrio, Head of Operational Planning and Technical Coordination of Tasks, also contributed with an overview on the dismantling of nuclear plants and management of radioactive waste. Onofrio outlined the main principles and ongoing activities at Sogin sites, highlighting the importance of a methodical and coordinated approach.

Considerable time was also dedicated to the National Repository and Technology Park project. Annafrancesca Mariani, Director of the National Repository and Technology Park (DNPT), illustrated the main features of the Italian project and siting procedure currently underway, while Daniele Marta, DNPT Stakeholder Engagement Manager, focused on the aspects relating to stakeholder involvement, underlining the importance of having an open and constructive dialogue to develop solid relationships with institutions and citizens.

The Summer School on Summer School on Nuclear Decommissioning and Waste Management offers courses run by experts from leading European companies in the sector. This programme aims to become an important platform for training and cultural exchanges, through an innovative teaching approach, the school contributes significantly to the training of highly qualified professionals in the nuclear field.
