ICPF: construction of storage building walls is underway

11 December 2020

At the ITREC plant in Rotondella, concrete is currently being poured to construct the elevated walls of the future storage building attached to the Finished Product Cementation Plant (Impianto Cementazione Prodotto Finito, ICPF). Pouring will continue until the final height of the walls is approximately 17 metres

The ICPF is the facility that will enable the cement mortar conditioning of approximately 3 cubic metres of the liquid radioactive solution known as 'finished product', which is the result of past nuclear fuel reprocessing activities carried out on the site.

The project envisages the construction of two communicating buildings, namely the building where the cementing process will take place and the adjacent storage building, which is currently undergoing pouring activities.

In the storage building, the approximately 170 items resulting from the cementation process will be safely stored, as will the two casks, namely highly resistant shielding containers in which the fuel elements currently stored in the ITREC pool and coming from the US Elk River reactor will be placed, pending their transfer to the National Repository.
