Garigliano: structures and auxiliary systems for the dismantling of the power plant were successfully tested

07 July 2023

On 5 July 2023, the testing of structures and auxiliary systems for the decommissioning of the Garigliano power plant was successfully completed. The upgrading of auxiliary systems, including fire and ventilation systems and the radiological monitoring system, was necessary to ensure alignment with recent safety standards during the upcoming dismantling activities at the Campania power plant.
The turbine building houses the Waste Management Facility, a complex structure consisting of several cells where the radioactive materials produced by the upcoming dismantling activities of the turbine building and the reactor building will be treated.

Thanks to the use of advanced techniques, the Facility will make it possible to decontaminate materials while significantly reducing the production of radioactive waste, in line with Sogin's circular economy strategy. In addition, the presence of robotic machines will ensure maximum operator safety, avoiding the risk of exposure. The tests, carried out entirely by Sogin personnel, were also attended by representatives of the Italian National Inspectorate for Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection (ISIN), which will issue the authorisation to proceed with the activities.

Once the operating licence has been obtained, it will be possible to start dismantling the components of the turbine building and, subsequently, the reactor building. This activity represents an important milestone for Sogin and is the result of the internalisation strategy that has helped to reduce time and costs by enhancing the company's professionalism, together with the commitment of the site staff.
