G7 2024, Nuclear Safety and Security Group

08 February 2024

As part of the Italian presidency of the 2024 G7, Sogin was called on by the Italian Institutions to cooperate in establishing the G7 Nuclear Safety and Security Group (NSSG) presidency team, assuming the vice presidency.

The Group, created in 2002, aims to provide leaders of the participating countries with technical advice on strategic policy issues on safety and security issues in the peaceful use of nuclear energy.

Work at the first meeting, under Italy’s chairmanship, took place between 5 and 7 February at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and focused, among other things, on the safety of nuclear installations in conflict areas, and the safety of new types of reactors, such as SMRs, AMRs and MRs.

The Group also discussed initiatives to promote adherence to international treaties on nuclear safety. Italy assumed the G7 Presidency on 1 January 2024 for the seventh time. The main event, the G7 Leaders' Summit, will take place from 13 to 15 June in Puglia.
