European Diversity Month, the Future+STEM campaign ends

31 May 2024

For the fourth consecutive year, Sogin joined the European Month of Diversity, the initiative raising awareness on the importance of diversity and inclusion in companies and organisations, promoted by the European Commission.

This year, the European Commission called on organisations to “embrace the future of the working world through inclusion and diversity”. On this basis, Sogin launched a training and awareness campaign, called “Future+STEM", to evaluate the many ramifications of the future, both internally and externally.

The course on "Gender harassment in the workplace" was held internally for the entire population of the Sogin Group. The aim was to raise awareness on the issue of harassment, both for anyone that is affected by it and those who commit it, and to provide the tools for recognising and managing bad behaviour, thus contributing to the development of an inclusive, safe working environment that is as free from psychological conditioning as possible.

Role Modeling meetings were organised externally for middle and high schools in the territories where the Company operates, involving about 300 students in the month of May alone. These meetings, which were the result of synergy and collaboration with local authorities and organisations, had the dual objective of bringing the new generations closer to studies and professions in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) fields and encouraging girls to overcome the gender stereotypes in this sector.

The first event was held on 9 May at the I.I.S.S. Ambrosoli in Rome with the career orientation focusing on the scientific and technological disciplines "...About Ste(a)m!" 2023/2024, promoted as part of the national Unindustria STEAMiamoci initiative. The Sogin role model Sogin Federica Pancotti, Head of New Technologies, shared her experience and discussed STEM careers for women.

The second event took place on 23 and 24 May, as part of Confindustria's "PMI Day - Industriamoci" and saw around 120 young people from some scientific high schools in Vercelli visit the Trino power plant (Vercelli). The event provided an opportunity for young students to talk to two Sogin role models, Nunzia Maria Radatti, Safety Manager, and Marica Cibelli, Radiation Protection Expert.

The third meeting of the month, organised in conjunction with the Municipality of Sessa Aurunca (Caserta) entitled “A more STEM future”, was held on Thursday 30 May, with about 120 students in attendance from higher education institutions in the area of Sessa Aurunca (Caserta).

The initiative was organised by Sogin and the Municipality of Sessa Aurunca with the common goal of bringing new generations closer to STEM studies and professions. Belinda Sepe, Director of Administration, Resources, Systems and ICT, spoke on behalf of Sogin about the Company's commitment and stimulated dialogue among the young people attending. Two Sogin Role Models, Marianna Ledda (Quality, Environment and Safety Manager – Garigliano Power Plant) and Marta Atzori (Laboratory Coordinator – Garigliano Power Plant), also shared their work experiences.

Participation in initiatives such as the European Diversity Month, together with other events undertaken over time, confirms the Sogin Group's overall commitment to contributing to social sustainability and enhancing diversity and inclusion at all levels and in different activities.
