Energy in Italy between the Green Deal and Draghi Agenda: CEO Artizzu speaks at the Civita event

02 July 2025

The event "Energy, competitiveness and industrial policies" took place on Monday 30 June. Europe's challenge between the 2024 Draghi Agenda and the new Green Deal", organised by the Civita Association in collaboration with the European Parliament Office in Italy. An opportunity for authoritative and stimulating discussion on how the Draghi Agenda, with its mission to strengthen the European system’s competitiveness, runs parallel and is intertwined with the main guidelines of the Green Deal, in a global context marked by complex energy and industrial challenges.

The meeting opened with institutional greetings from Gianni Letta, President of the Civita Association, Carlo Corazza, Director of the European Parliament Office in Italy, and Simonetta Giordani, Civita Secretary General. This was followed by the opening speech by Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, who stressed the need for a national energy strategy based on innovation, technological neutrality and strategic autonomy.

During the round table, moderated by journalist Safiria Leccese, the CEO of Sogin, Gian Luca Artizzu, outlined the role and work done by Sogin, starting with a key message: nuclear decommissioning is not the "terminal" experience of a production sector, but rather "a phase in the nuclear process itself". During operations, nuclear power plants are in fact "continuously updated" thanks to the maintenance done on the facilities and systems and, even when they stop producing energy, it is necessary to continue managing the nuclear fuel that is present.

Based on this premise, Artizzu explained how, almost forty years after shutting down the power plants, Sogin has managed to retain a substantial part of Italy's nuclear human and technological expertise.

The speech was also an opportunity to reiterate that when it comes to energy, we must think from a supply chain perspective, and nuclear is the source that brings together the environment, safety and industrial growth.

For the CEO Sogin, we need to make a choice that makes us independent along the entire supply chain based on "a solid energy mix that allows us to reason over the long term with the security provided by nuclear or other programmable sources".

The round table was also attended by Elena Donazzan, Vice-President of the European Parliament's Committee on Industry, Research and Energy, Nicola Lanzetta, Enel's Italy Director, Renato Mazzoncini, CEO of A2A, and Nicola Monti, CEO of Edison.
