Data on decommissioning progress available online

- In 2021, decommissioning activities sped up and recorded spending of about EUR 120 Million, the best result achieved by the Company since its establishment
- The Company implemented an accurate monitoring process that allows recording decommissioning physical progress, which, combined with the economical ones, testify Sogin's work effectiveness
- Sogin improved its performance by boosting the decommissioning progress and showed its ability to achieve 7.2% physical progress by the end of 2021, a figure sensibly higher than the average 1.4% completed over the previous twenty years
- As of 31 December 2021, Sogin's staff will account for 858 units, compared to the 924 employees working at the end of 2020. The 2021 staff includes 550 operators employed in monitoring the sites' nuclear safety, which has been constantly ensured despite the pandemic crisis
- The public consultation for implementing the National Repository for Radioactive Waste and Technology Park was launched and managed in line with the procedures provided under the Legislative Decree no. 31/2010. The consultation saw the participation of many relevant stakeholders
Yesterday, Emanuele Fontani - Sogin's CEO, presented the decommissioning progress expected by 31.12.2021 during the Sogin's BoD, chaired by Luigi Perri. Under the transparency and publicity obligations, this data has been published and is available in a special section of the website sogin.it.
In 2021, a new cost accounting method was adopted. The method provides for the introduction of cost recognition against the actual physical progress of the activities, and not only in relation to a mere commitment of expenditure. Its adoption also reduced management cost items (from 5 to 3) such as structural, progress, and costs applicable to multiple years.
Despite the pandemic, Sogin recorded a decommissioning progress cost equal to EUR 120 Million (including about EUR 85 Million calculated under the previous regulatory system), namely the best result achieved by the Company since its establishment.
The nuclear contract physical advancement amounts to 7.2%, more than 0.5% more than the expected 6.6%, with an overall percentage of 35.5% calculated from 1999 (28.3% as of 31.12.2020).
These results confirm the provisions laid under the 2020-2025 industrial plan and the Company's commitment to accelerating decommissioning activities, optimising costs, and keeping the plants safe maintenance by ensuring the protection of land, workers, and environment thanks to regular accurate planned checks.
In 2021, the main activities performed in the nuclear power plants included the following: operation of the Leco plant for the extraction and conditioning of radioactive sludge in Latina; full removal of the purifier pool for "activated" components in Trino plant; construction of the Ersba 2 interim repository and the waste route in Caorso, where the whole shipment of resins is expected to be completed by early 2022; construction of the new radwaste facility and reclamation of the third and last trench in Garigliano plant.
As far as nuclear power plants are concerned, they have been involved in the following activities: the final dismantling of MOX research and manufacturing devices in Casaccia IPU plant; end of the activities of the first decommissioning phase in Bosco Marengo; launch of works to build the Cemex Complex for the solidification of liquid radioactive waste in the Eurex site of Saluggia, following the contract awarding concluded at the end of 2020; completion of the civil works for the implementation of the interim repository of Rotondella Itrec plant belonging to the Finished Product Cementation Plant, which works will be contracted through a call for tenders to be concluded by early 2022.
The
National Seminar, held from 7 September to 24 November, was attended by more than 160 participants and featured the contributions of local entities, associations, committees, workers' associations, local trade unions, and individuals. The
publication of the Seminar Report on 15 December paved the way to the second public consultation phase aimed at drafting the CNAI, the National Charter of Suitable Areas.
In collaboration with its subsidiary company
Nucleco, Sogin has launched the reclamation actions specified under the Agreement ratified with the
Single Commissioner for the Rehabilitation of Landfills. Moreover, the Company also launched the research activities defined under the Agreement with the Anti-Fraud Inspectorate of the Ministry of
Agricultural Policies to develop innovative solutions to ensure the traceability of agricultural and food products based on their isotope content.
The Company also renewed its ten-year collaboration with the Carabinieri's Environmental Protection and Ecological Transition Command, as defined in their MoU, to detect, recover and ensure the safe maintenance of orphan radiation sources.
Over the year, the Company has been committed to strengthening its internal control system, and it is now working to verify any critical issues connected to previous management aspects.
