Sogin participated to an intense week of works promoted by the IAEA

24 May 2022
The Consultancy Meeting on New and Emerging Technologies to Advance Decommissioning Projects was held in Vienna at the Agency headquarter, to prepare for a planned Technical Meeting on New and Emerging Technologies to Advance Decommissioning Projects, scheduled to place on 29th August to 2nd September 2022. This Technical Meeting is expected to launch a new collaborative activity on data management and modelling activities in decommissioning, including the use of Building Information Management (BIM) approaches.

Sogin was invited to participate to the Consultancy Meeting, together with other representatives of the decommissioning sector from other Member States, to discuss about the use of digital, innovative and emerging technologies in the field of data management, planning and implementation of decommissioning projects, to identify the possible areas for collaboration.

Our Company was represented by Federica Pancotti, Head of Technological Innovation, and Alfredo La Rosa, Head of Digital Innovation, who presented the consolidated experiences from Sogin and Nucleco in the use of digital tools and BIM (Bulding Information Modeling) approach for the dismantling activities.

The initiative is in continuity with the IAEA Technical Meeting on Advancing Human Resource Development and Competence Building for Decommissioning hosted by Sogin at the Caorso plant from 29 November to 3 December last year.

This confirms the role of the Company in promoting digitalization and technological innovation, one of the sustainable development goals of the United Nations 2030 Agenda.

The International Workshop on Lessons Learned from the Implementation of Decommissioning Projects for Water Cooled, Water Moderated Power Reactors (WWERs) took place simultaneously in Trnava, Slovakia. The meeting was aimed at disseminating and sharing operational practices for the dismantling of the WWER-type reactors of Russian design.

The event was attended by various international organizations and operators in the sector. As Collaborating Center of the IAEA, Sogin contributed with Fabrizio Massicci, an engineer expert in mechanical design. Massicci presented the progress of the decommissioning program of the four Italian Nuclear Power Plants and a focus on the decommissioning of the WWER reactors in comparison with the more similar PWR (Pressurized Water Reactor), which Sogin is going to dismantle in Trino Nuclear Power Plant (Vercelli).
