50 students at Caorso for World Environment Day

06 June 2025
On 5 June, on World Environment Day, the Sogin Group reiterated its commitment to sustainability and environmental protection. The theme chosen for 2025, "Combating plastic pollution", represents a global challenge that the Company has taken up, by integrating it into its business strategies. The reduction of the use of single-use plastic, the promotion of alternative eco-compatible materials and activation of recycling and recovery programmes for plastic used in industrial processes are just some of the initiatives put in place to limit the environmental impact of our activities.

This anniversary is not only a moment of reflection, but an opportunity to take tangible action. Awareness and training are central aspects of Sogin's commitment, because educating new generations about sustainability means building a more cognisant and responsible future.

As part of the celebrations for this Day, the Caorso (Piacenza) site welcomed second-year students of the Master's degree course in Energy Engineering-Nuclear Fission and Fusion Plants from the University of Padua. About 50 young people visited the controlled area of the site, accompanied by Sogin technicians and experts, experiencing the reactor building, the control room and the temporary repository for radioactive waste at first hand. The experience proved to be highly formative: the students showed enthusiasm and interest, learning about the advanced technologies and methodologies adopted in waste management and decommissioning operations.

World Environment Day, established in 1972 by the United Nations General Assembly, is an international event that involves countries around the world in the common commitment to preserve ecosystems. The date of 5 June recalls the historic Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment, when the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) was born. The main objective is to raise public awareness and stimulate collective action to address environmental challenges, promoting a more responsible management of natural resources.
