Sogin completes the civil works on new storage repository no. 2 at Trino nuclear power plant
20 January 2026

The reconstructed structure on the same area as the old repository will contain the radioactive waste from the plant pending its transfer to the National Repository
Sogin has completed demolition and subsequent reconstruction work on temporary storage repository no. 2 for low-level radioactive waste at the “Enrico Fermi” nuclear power plant in Trino (Vercelli), bringing it into line with the latest safety standards required by law.
The work on the 41-metre long, 19-metre wide and 8.5-metre high structure, which began in November 2024, involved the demolition of the old repository and its reconstruction on the same area, with a volume equal to that of the dismantled building. The new repository will house both the previous waste, now stored in repository no. 1 and in the room called ‘Test Tank Buffer’, and the waste that will be produced by the next decommissioning operations.
At the same time, the characterisation and disposal of materials resulting from demolition work, consisting mainly of iron, concrete and excavated soil, have been completed.
The project now involves the installation of electrical, fire prevention and radiological monitoring systems, which will be completed by the end of the first half of this year, while commissioning, following testing, is scheduled for the first part of 2027.
Upon completion, Sogin will begin work on upgrading the other repository on site, no. 1, as part of the programme to optimise storage space for radioactive waste produced by the plant's operation and the ongoing dismantling work, with a view to its subsequent transfer to the National Repository once it becomes available.
