Sogin and Unindustria: a training day at the Pirelli Institute in Rome

18 March 2025
On 13 March, the "Leopoldo Pirelli" Higher Institute  in Rome hosted a STEM orientation and training day entitled "Radioactivity, nuclear and radioactive waste: Sogin and the value of skills", organized by Sogin in collaboration with Unindustria Roma , as part of the STEAMiamoci project. The meeting, which took place in the school auditorium, saw about 80 students taking part from classes III, IV and V of the CAT (Construction, Environment and Territory) section. Greetings from Raffaella Merlino, Head of Human Capital at Unindustria, and Benedetta Celata, Head of Institutional Affairs at Sogin opened the proceedings.

Next, Sogin's two role models, Federica Pancotti, Head of Technological Innovation, and Miriam Lombardo, Head of Localization, Environmental Assessments and Monitoring for the National Repository and Technological Park, shared their experiences in the STEM field with students, recounting the training and professional paths they had undertaken to motivate young people to pursue careers in these disciplines.

During the subsequent training, as part of the PCTO orientation (Pathways for Transversal Skills and Orientation), Pancotti and Lombardo then addressed various issues relating to the activities carried out by Sogin, such as nuclear, the decommissioning process, radioactive waste management and siting of the National Repository, highlighting the multidisciplinary approach adopted.

At the end of the training session, to consolidate the concepts learned in an engaging and interactive way, students were involved in a final quiz, the results showing their interest and commitment to the topics covered.

The event is part of the ongoing commitment by Sogin over several years in developing role modelling initiatives and overcoming stereotypes in career paths, carried out at schools, universities and during awareness campaigns, such as the National Week of STEM disciplines or the European Month of Diversity.
