A medal for Sogin from Rosatom

15 March 2013
Russia’s State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom has awarded a medal to Sogin in recognition of its “international collaboration in the nuclear sector,” for its commitment in the dismantling of Russian nuclear submarines and in the securing of their radioactive waste.

The award was bestowed on the tenth anniversary of the debut of the Global Partnership project, an international aid program for the Russian Federation, which was launched in 2002 by the G8 in order to solve the grave problems generated by the Cold War nuclear legacy. In particular, it entailed the dismantling of 197 nuclear submarines  in a state of disuse with nuclear fuel still on board, as well as the securing of vast quantities of radioactive waste, which were posing a critical threat to the environment.

Sogin, the state company in charge of nuclear site clean-up and the securing of radioactive waste in Italy, was entrusted by the Italian government in 2005 with the task of coordinating general activities and carrying out all operations in Russia for the abovementioned purposes.  As of today, these activities, implemented in collaboration with other Italian companies, have involved six nuclear submarines and the management of a series of important projects for the treatment, transportation and  safe storage of radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel.

After ten years of operations, many of the problems have been solved, and with this medal, which has so far been awarded, other than to Italy, solely to Canada, France, Germany and Japan, Rosatom honors those companies and those countries that have excelled in increasing nuclear safety within the Russian Federation.
