NUWCEM 2022

10 May 2022

Sogin, in partnership with Nucleco, took part in NUWCEM 2022 (4th International Symposium on Cement-Based Materials for Nuclear Wastes) held in Avignon, France, from 4 to 6 May 2022. The event, organised by SFEN (Société française d’énergie nucléaire) and CEA (Commissariat à l'énergie atomique et aux énergies alternatives), involved several representatives of relevant scientific entities and organisations, and aimed to promote the exchange of know-how and experiences related to research and development related to the solidification of low-level and medium-level radioactive waste in a cement matrix.

The Symposium consisted of five technical sessions during which experts from 20 countries presented 120 works divided into 60 presentations and 60 posters.

The conference set a relevant occasion to promote Sogin and Nucleco's competencies and skills. More specifically, the Company presented the topic 'Multiphase (oil/water/sludge) radioactive liquid waste solidification with polymer and cement – Sogin Experience' and a poster 'Formulation Development and Process Qualification Activities for Direct Cementation of Small Volume of Alpha Contaminated Aqueous Waste', both illustrated by Federica Pancotti, Sogin's Head of Technological Development and Innovation, during technical session no. 1 'Design of cement waste packages'.

The event was also joined by Graziano Pugliese, Head of Health Chemistry and Physics, who collaborated on the work on Bosco Marengo site, Tiziano Vignaroli and Roberto Iacovacci, experts in radioactive waste management on behalf of Sogin, and Davide Cori, Head of the Laboratory for Process qualification and co-author of the poster presented during the conference.
