Remediation of trenches

Status: completed
Duration: 2014-2021

At the end of the 1960s, during the first years of the plant's operation, the disposal of very low-level radioactive waste produced during the plant's operation (technological material such as, for example, the PPE normally used by the plant's workers) through the use of burial trenches was authorised by the regulatory bodies in charge at the time. The three trenches that had to be remedied were built precisely for this purpose.

In 2014 , the remediation of Trenches 2 and 3, was carried out, while in 2017 preparatory work began for the remediation of Trench 1 (construction of the roof structure and systems), and the removal of radioactive waste in the trench was completed in 2020. Final characterisation activities for clearing the area from any existing radiological constraints have begun and will be completed by 2021.

The waste produced by the reclamation of trenches 2 and 3 was stored in the D1 temporary storage facility, pending its final disposal in the National Repository.

The waste produced by the reclamation of Trench 1, completed in 2021, will also be disposed as such.
